Tracking the gap between two drivers over race distance to see pressure and pace.

Gap evolution charts are one of Sportami's primary analysis tools — they show how the time gap between any two drivers changes across every lap of the race. A single gap number tells you who's ahead; the evolution tells you who's winning the strategic battle. Converging lines mean an attack is building. Diverging lines mean the lead is secure. Sudden jumps reveal pit stops, safety cars, and incidents. Reading gap evolution turns a confusing field of 20 cars into clear storylines of pursuit, defense, and strategic maneuvering.

Convergence = Pressure Building

When the gap chart shows two lines converging — the gap shrinking — the trailing driver has a pace advantage. The rate of convergence tells you when the battle will happen. A gap closing by 0.5 seconds per lap from 5 seconds means the confrontation is about 10 laps away.

Divergence = Gap Growing

When lines diverge, the leading driver is pulling away. This might be due to clean-air pace advantage, better tire management, or the trailing driver being stuck in traffic. Divergence means the position is becoming safer — no pit strategy trick will close the gap.

Pit Stop Discontinuities

Pit stops create sudden jumps in the gap chart — the pitting driver's gap to the leader increases by the pit stop time (22–25 seconds). By comparing the gap before and after a pit stop cycle, you can see whether the stop gained or lost position. If the gap shrinks after both drivers have pitted, the stop was a net gain.

Safety Car Compression

The Inevitable Catch

The gap chart shows a steady, consistent convergence — 0.4 seconds per lap over 15 laps. Starting from 6 seconds, the gap reaches zero around lap 20. The overtake was inevitable from the data — the pursuing car was clearly faster, and no strategic intervention changed the outcome.

Undercut Visible in the Chart
