Compounds, degradation, and why tire choice shapes every race.

Tires are the single most important variable in F1 race strategy. Three dry-weather compounds — soft, medium, and hard — offer different tradeoffs between grip and durability. Softs are fastest but wear out quickly. Hards are slowest but last longest. Every strategic decision in a race — when to pit, how many stops to make, whether to attack or conserve — flows from tire behavior. Understanding tire basics is the gateway to understanding why races unfold the way they do.

When a driver on old softs is being caught by someone on fresh mediums, the compound tradeoff is playing out in real time. The driver on softs was faster early but is now paying the price.

Real-World Examples

Soft Start, Medium Finish

A driver starts on soft tires, gaining positions in the opening laps with superior grip. By lap 18, the softs are degraded and they pit for mediums. The mediums are slower but last the remaining 40 laps without needing another stop — the one-stop strategy succeeds.

Wrong Compound — Lost Race

A team gambles on hard tires for the opening stint, hoping to run long and pit late. But the hards never reach their operating temperature on a cool day. The driver is 1.5 seconds slower than rivals on mediums for the entire first stint, dropping from fourth to tenth.

Intermediate Timing Gamble

Rain begins to dry and teams must decide: stay on intermediates (safe but slow on dry patches) or switch to slicks (fast on dry patches but dangerous on remaining wet spots). One team switches to slicks two laps early, gains 3 seconds per lap, and jumps from eighth to third.
